The Ministry of Planning and Economic Policy (MIDEPLAN) announced on Thursday, March 1, the results of the social development index for 2017, in which the canton of Escazú is positioned in the first place of the 81 cantons of the country .
This study indicates that Escazú is the national canton in which the population has a higher quality of life, with higher general welfare levels at the social level.
The index is composed of the measurement of five statistical dimensions, which are the following:
Economic: Participation in economic activity and enjoy adequate conditions of employment.
Social participation: Level of civic participation in the local and national electoral processes of the last five years.
Health: General health levels and access to formal health networks by number of inhabitants.
Educational: Low levels of school backwardness and provision of education services by number of inhabitants.
Security: Number of intentional homicides and road deaths by number of inhabitants.
The fact that Escazú is positioned nationwide in the first place in the social development index adds to the recognition that last year the School of Economics at the University of Costa Rica made Escazú for competitiveness index; and likewise with studies of the State of the Nation, which acknowledged that the Municipality of Escazú is the local government annually invests more in social and educational programs nationwide.
“The municipality of Escazú has been working hard to achieve substantial improvements in those aspects that allow improving the quality of life of the inhabitants of the canton, looking for actions to reach all sectors,” said Mayor Arnoldo Barahona.
The above is reflected in the efforts that the Municipality is currently developing in the insertion of youth into the labor market through the Municipal Training Center for Employment and the Municipal Employment Intermediation Program, attention to school dropout through the Program Municipal of Open Education for adults at primary and secondary level, the Educational Reinforcement Programs for diversified education students.
On the other hand, in terms of security, the Municipality of Escazú in the year 2017 mounted the first integrated system of video security in the country, which has the highest international technology; likewise, it was significantly invested in the vehicle fleet of the Municipal Police, which significantly lowered the response times of this police force.
All these actions are part of the permanent and growing policy of the local government of Escazú to improve the living standards of the population of Escazú, which we find present in the Social Development Index of 2017.
